Venice pictures by John Orlando Birt that capture the romance of one of the world’s most beautiful cities.
John paints “en plein air” reflecting in his work a pursuit of artistic integrity from his drawing skills, due to his meticulous compositional ability and his unique approach at capturing light, air and space.
“It is the challenge of capturing the changing moods that light creates across the day and it’s subsequent effects on the surroundings such as buildings, the countryside and the water. The single most important factor in my painting is the light; that is light portrayed, light reflected and light suffused,’ John explains.
“Painting on location ensures that the essence of the subject remains the first priotity, especially the subtleties, nuances and tempo of that particular region.”
John travels to Europe each year during spring and summer to paint the historically rich cities villages and landscapes he feels so passionate about. John has held twenty five solo exhibitions, three in Venice Italy including two at the prestigious Gallery Holly Snapp.
Born in Broken Hill, John was educated in Adelaide, South Australia, where he attended the South Australian School of Art majoring in fine art and art history. He now resides in Melbourne.
John has won numerous awards, tutored, held workshops and lectured in Australia and overseas, including the University of Venice Italy Architectural School. He has also undertaken extensive Commissions.
